The Necessities of Cat Ownership
Oh?... You are welcoming in a new family member?
It's a new kitten?
You don't say!
How lovely!
Oh, and I also see that you have come prepared with your "Cat Needs Checklist", your list of things to do before the kitten even has time to wipe his paws at the door. Clearly, you've done your research so let's see what’s on this list of yours.
1. Cat food. This is obviously a good start. Although, it may seem silly bringing home a cat and have nothing for it to eat is an "oops" moment, many pet owners have actually forgotten a time or two. Start off right!
2. Cat litter and a litter box. This is very good too. And it’s the scoopable liter? Nice choice. This scoopable liter is by far the best cat necessity ever invented! This liter clumps when wet so all you need is a pooper scooper and you can get right to it. This way, you can safe time and money by not having to completely empty all of the liter, every day.
3. Toys. Well, aren't we a little entertainer. This may not seem like a necessity to everyone but in reality, cats get bored as well, just like children. Also, just like children, your new cat may find more enjoyment from playing with the box rather than the actual cat toy. Don't be dismayed...your cat is just having a good time. It's like a party to him!
Most cats will enjoy any toy as long as they are in a playful mood. I have a cat and he loves to dig around in my yarn -- as well as my stack of computer paper, jewelry, and has even mastered the art of disassembling ink pens. He's a curious little one but he's really only looking for an adventure. Take this little tip when it comes time for gift-giving, as cat toys make great gifts for cat owners.
4. A good reliable veterinarian. This is a great thing to have on the list and although your cat might not want it now, it's best to be safe. Setting up a stable vet before your kitten comes home makes it easy to ensure proper medical care and emergency assistance in time of need.
If you’re new to the whole, veterinarian scene then do research before just choosing any ol' one. For a point in the right direction, you could try asking fellow pet owners, shelters, or the Humane Society. Fellow pet owners will probably give you the name of THEIR veterinarian and shelters will recommend the best vet for the least buck. Any of the reference choices will definitely help you choose which vet is right for your pet.
5. A brush. This is crucial! A brush serves many purposes. For one, you and your kitten will have great bonding time together. Also, brushing will help reduce shedding which you cat will like because that means less grooming by themselves. The less grooming your cat has to do, the less likely they are of dropping a hairball here or there. This one is probably a benefit for both of you, so break out that cat brush and break it out often!
6. Patience. Patience is a great thing to have when bringing home a new kitten. Remember, taking home a cat for the first time is very exciting them. They are surrounded by so many new smells and new surroundings. Let them explore so they can begin to adjust. You also must note that the training of a dog and the training for a cat are two completely different things. With cat training, you may find yourself saying one thing not to do as he goes ahead and does it anyway (like jumping on the counters). Be patient and appreciate his determination; he's still learning.
7. Love. Awesome! Love is absolutely a crucial part to successful pet ownership. Cats thrive on love, just like any other pet so dish it out! Just look into those eyes; how could you not love a face like that?!
With proper love and patience, all the rest of the details will work themselves out with time. As for right now, it's just you and your new furry feline. So what are you waiting for? His paws are knocking!
